In the early 1950's James Barrett Sr. worked for Fitzgerald Brothers Asphalt Co. (later to become Callahan Industries) as a plant operator. In 1951, James Sr. began renting trucks and paving driveways on weekends and during the week after his shift at Fitzgerald Brothers. James Sr. had a dream to own and operate his own company, however he would need to stop renting trucks and equipment and purchase his own in order to make this dream a reality. To overcome this challenge, James Sr. would load milk trucks for Troy's Diamond Rock Creamery from 2:00 AM to 6:00 AM, lay driveways from 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM six days a week, and he worked as an usher at Troy's Bijou Theatre from 6:30 PM to 10:30 PM. His hard work and dedication paid off and James Sr. purchased his first dump truck from Neil Caellaher Sr. at Cartwright Ford in Troy, NY in 1955 and Barrett Blacktop Construction Company was in full gear. James Sr. would be joined by his son James Barrett Jr. in 1962, beginning the second generation of the family paving company. James Jr. worked every position within the company and learned the practices, principles, and standards of the asphalt industry. James Jr. took over company in 1984 and has since been joined by three sons, Brian, Patrick, and Liam. Following in their grandfather's footsteps of hard work and dedication, this third generation of Barrett's continue to take pride in every aspect of the paving industry.
